Nsukka Iron Smelting Site

About

The Nsukka area contains some of the oldest iron-smelting sites in West Africa, with radiocarbon dates placing activity as early as 750 BCE at Opi and Lejja. These sites produced evidence of sophisticated furnace technology, including large slag blocks weighing several tonnes. The finds at Lejja challenged previous narratives about the origins of iron technology in sub-Saharan Africa.
