Hausa Kalangu Drummers Quarter (Zaria)

About

Zaria in Kaduna State is a historic center for the kalangu (Hausa talking drum) tradition. Like its Yoruba counterpart the dundun, the kalangu can mimic the tonal patterns of the Hausa language. Hereditary praise-singer (marok'i) lineages in Zaria have preserved the tradition of drumming for emirate courts, naming ceremonies, and political events.
