Shekere Makers Guild (Abeokuta)

Abeokuta in Ogun State is known as a center for the production of shekere (ṣẹ̀kẹ̀rẹ̀), a gourd rattle covered in a net of beads or cowrie shells. The shekere is one of the most widely used percussion instruments in Yoruba music and has spread throughout the African diaspora. Local artisans continue to produce shekere using traditional techniques.
