Bobby Benson's Caban Bamboo (Lagos)

About

Bobby Benson's Caban Bamboo nightclub, established in the early 1950s on Broad Street, Lagos Island, was the first purpose-built live music nightclub in Nigeria. Bobby Benson, often called the father of Nigerian highlife, trained a generation of musicians here including Victor Olaiya, Rex Lawson, and Roy Chicago. The venue was a crucible for the fusion of Yoruba musical traditions with jazz, calypso, and Latin music that produced the Lagos highlife sound.
