Gidan Sarki Drumming Court (Katsina)

About

The Emir's Palace (Gidan Sarki) in Katsina has maintained a royal drumming court (Masu Rok'o) for centuries. The court musicians play at ceremonial occasions including the Durbar festival, Sallah celebrations, and turban installations. Katsina's drumming tradition is distinctive for its use of the tambari (large state drum), whose sounding signals the authority of the Emir. The tambari tradition represents one of the oldest forms of organized court music in the Sahel.
