EMI Nigeria's Apapa studio was the dominant recording facility in Nigeria during the 1970s and 1980s, producing recordings for virtually every major Nigerian musician of the era. Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Sonny Okosun, Onyeka Onwenu, and Christy Essien-Igbokwe all recorded here. The studio was instrumental in the development of Afrobeat, juju, and Nigerian pop as internationally recognized genres.
