Bida in Niger State is one of the few places in sub-Saharan Africa where traditional glass bead-making has been practiced for centuries. The Nupe craftsmen of Bida also produce distinctive brass and silver jewelry using techniques that predate European contact. The glass bead tradition is believed to have connections to ancient trans-Saharan trade networks.
