Enugu Coal City Heritage

About

Enugu, the "Coal City", grew around Nigeria's first commercial coal mine discovered in 1909. The Onyeama and Okpara mines powered the colonial railway system and shaped modern southeastern Nigeria. The coal mining heritage represents the intersection of industrial technology with Igbo labor and community organization. The city became the capital of the Eastern Region and later Biafra.
