Kano Dye Pits (Kofar Mata)

About

The Kofar Mata dye pits in Kano are among the oldest in Africa, dating back over 500 years to the reign of Muhammad Rumfa. These communal indigo dyeing vats have been in continuous use, producing the famed deep blue cloth that gave Kano its historic reputation as the "indigo city." The pits remain a living industrial heritage site where traditional methods of fermentation-based indigo dyeing are still practiced.
