Technology & Craft Seat

Awka Blacksmith Quarter

About

Awka has been renowned since pre-colonial times as a center of iron smithing and metalwork. The Awka smiths (Ụzụ Awka) were itinerant craftsmen who traveled across Igboland and beyond, producing tools, weapons, and ceremonial objects. Their guild-like social organization and technical sophistication made them one of the most documented craft traditions in West African ethnography.
