Kofar Mata Dye Pits

About

The Kofar Mata dye pits in Kano are among the oldest continuously operated indigo dye pits in Africa, dating to at least the 15th century. Located near the Kofar Mata gate of the old city, these communal pits have been used by generations of Hausa dyers to produce the deep blue cloth that gave Kano its historical name "the city of indigo." The pits remain active today, serving both local artisans and tourists.
