Zungeru Colonial Commodity Depot

About

Zungeru in Niger State served as the capital of the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria from 1902 to 1916 under Lord Lugard. The town was the administrative center for colonial commodity extraction, particularly groundnuts, cotton, and tin. The Royal Niger Company established trading depots here that became early sites for the transition from cowrie shell and cloth strip currencies to British colonial coinage. Zungeru represents the physical infrastructure through which colonial monetary policy was imposed on northern Nigeria.
