Apomu Market (Historic Cowrie Exchange)

About

Apomu in Osun State was one of the most important pre-colonial markets in the Yoruba interior, strategically located at the intersection of major trade routes linking Ibadan, Ife, Ijebu, and Ondo. The market was a key node for the exchange of cowrie shells (owó eyo), palm oil, cloth, and enslaved people. Its importance was such that control over Apomu was a frequent cause of 19th-century Yoruba wars. The market's cowrie-denominated trade continued well into the colonial era.
