Lokoja Confluence Trading Post

About

Lokoja, situated at the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers in Kogi State, was one of the most strategically important trading settlements in Nigeria. The British established a trading post here in 1841 during the Niger Expedition, and it became the first administrative capital of the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria. The confluence location made it a natural exchange point where goods and currencies from the Hausa north, Yoruba southwest, Igbo southeast, and Middle Belt converged. Cowries, manillas, cloth strips, and British coinage all circulated simultaneously in Lokoja's markets.
