Badagry Cowrie Market

About

Badagry in Lagos State was a major coastal trading center where cowrie shells — the predominant pre-colonial currency in Yorubaland and beyond — were exchanged. Cowries (owó eyo) arrived via Indian Ocean trade networks through East Africa and were used as currency, dowry, and ritual objects. Their use persisted into the early 20th century in some areas.
