Igbo-Ukwu Bronze Hoard

About

Igbo-Ukwu in Anambra State is the site of one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in West Africa. Excavated by Thurstan Shaw in 1959-1964, the site yielded over 700 bronze artifacts dated to the 9th century CE — predating European contact. The bronzes indicate long-distance trade connections (glass beads from Venice/Egypt) and a sophisticated local metalworking tradition.
