Brass (Nembe) Palm Oil Trading Station

About

Brass (Nembe) in Bayelsa State was one of the principal palm oil exporting stations in the Niger Delta during the 19th century. As the Atlantic slave trade was suppressed, palm oil replaced enslaved people as the dominant export commodity — a transition that reshaped the Delta's economy. The trading stations at Brass were controlled by Nembe middlemen who brokered between interior producers and European ships. The Akassa Raid of 1895, when Brass warriors attacked the Royal Niger Company depot, was a direct response to commercial monopolization.
