Aba Women's War Market (Oloko)

About

The market at Oloko near Aba in Abia State was the flashpoint of the 1929 Aba Women's War (Ogu Umunwaanyi), one of the most significant anti-colonial uprisings in West African history. The revolt was triggered by attempts to impose direct taxation on women and interference with market trade. Women traders, who controlled the palm oil and food commodity markets, mobilized across Owerri and Calabar provinces. The uprising demonstrated the economic and political power of market women and led to reforms in colonial indirect rule policy.
