Jos Tin Mining Exchange

About

Jos, capital of Plateau State, became the hub of Nigeria's tin mining industry from the early 1900s. The Jos Plateau held some of the richest alluvial tin deposits in the world, and by the 1920s Nigeria was the world's sixth-largest tin producer. The commodity exchange established here attracted European mining companies, Lebanese traders, and Hausa middlemen, creating a multi-ethnic commercial hub. Tin was exported via the newly built railway to Port Harcourt, reshaping Nigeria's economic geography.
