Natural Heritage Site

Lake Chad Basin (Nigerian Shore)

About

Lake Chad, once one of the largest lakes in Africa, has shrunk by approximately 90% since the 1960s due to climate change and irrigation demands. The Nigerian portion of the lake basin in Borno State supports fishing communities of the Kanuri, Shuwa Arab, and Buduma peoples. The lake's ecosystem includes seasonal wetlands, floodplains, and reed beds that support migratory birds. The shrinkage of Lake Chad is considered one of the most significant ecological crises in the Sahel region.
