Kainji Lake and National Park

About

Kainji Lake National Park, established in 1979, was Nigeria's first national park. It surrounds Kainji Lake, a reservoir created in 1968 by the damming of the River Niger. The park covers 5,382 square kilometers across Niger and Kwara states and encompasses the Borgu and Zugurma game reserves. It supports West African manatees, hippos, lions, and large populations of migratory waterbirds. The Borgu people who inhabit the buffer zones have historically coexisted with wildlife through traditional hunting regulations.
