Ijaw Amanyanabo Council (Nembe)

About

The Amanyanabo (ruler) of Nembe presides over one of the oldest Ijaw governance systems in the Niger Delta, with Nembe Kingdom dating to the 15th century. The council of war canoe house chiefs formed a deliberative assembly that governed trade, warfare, and community justice. Nembe's "house system" — where political authority derived from commercial and military strength rather than lineage alone — represented an adaptive meritocratic governance model. King Koko of Nembe led the 1895 resistance against the Royal Niger Company.
