About

The Ekpe (Leopard) Society is the premier governance and judicial institution of the Efik people in Calabar, Cross River State. Historically, Ekpe lodges served as courts of law, enforced trade agreements, collected debts, and maintained public order in the Cross River region. The society's multi-grade initiation system ensured that governance authority was distributed among elders. Ekpe's nsibidi script, used for record-keeping, is one of the oldest indigenous writing systems in Africa.
