Oyo Mesi Council Chamber (Old Oyo)

Sensitive

About

The Oyo Mesi was the supreme council of seven hereditary chiefs in the Oyo Empire, serving as a constitutional check on the Alaafin (king). The council held the power to compel the Alaafin's abdication through the ritual of the rejected calabash — one of Africa's earliest documented mechanisms of executive accountability. Old Oyo (Oyo-Ile), now an archaeological site in Oyo State, was the imperial capital where the Oyo Mesi convened from the 14th to 19th centuries.
