Values & Governance Seat

Aro Confederacy Council Ground (Arochukwu)

Sensitive

About

Arochukwu in Abia State was the seat of the Aro Confederacy, a powerful 17th–19th century Igbo mercantile and judicial network. The Aro used the Long Juju oracle (Ibini Ukpabi) at the Arochukwu caves as a supreme court of arbitration, settling disputes from across Igboland and beyond. The oracle system represented an early form of centralized justice within the broader Igbo acephalous political tradition. The site remains culturally significant to Aro identity.
