Alkali Court Heritage (Kano City)

About

The Alkali courts of Kano are rooted in the Islamic judicial tradition established during the Sokoto Caliphate in the early 19th century. The Alkali (judge) adjudicated civil disputes, family law, and commercial cases under Maliki Islamic jurisprudence, serving as the primary judicial institution in Hausa city-states. Kano's Alkali court system was one of the most sophisticated pre-colonial legal systems in sub-Saharan Africa and continues to operate as part of Nigeria's Sharia court system in northern states.
