Emir of Kano Palace — Gidan Rumfa Complex

About

Gidan Rumfa is the sprawling palace complex of the Emir of Kano, originally built in the 15th century by Muhammad Rumfa (r. 1463-1499), who is credited with many administrative reforms of the Kano emirate. The palace covers approximately 33 acres in the heart of the old city, featuring a labyrinth of interconnected courtyards, audience chambers, and residential quarters built in the traditional tubali (sun-dried mud brick) style. The zaure (entrance vestibule) is a masterwork of Hausa architectural ornamentation with intricate geometric plasterwork.
