Shitta-Bey Mosque, Lagos

About

The Shitta-Bey Mosque, completed in 1894 in the Martins Street area of Lagos Island, was built by Mohammed Shitta, a wealthy Yoruba merchant and Brazilian returnee. It is one of the most architecturally significant early mosques in Nigeria, blending Brazilian baroque elements with Islamic architectural traditions. The building features elaborate stucco work, pointed arches, and a distinctive minaret. It was the first mosque in Lagos built with imported materials and served as a community center for the Muslim elite.
