Bonny Island Trading Station

About

Bonny (Ibani) in Rivers State was the most important slave-trading port in the Bight of Biafra from the 17th to 19th centuries, and later became the dominant palm oil exporting station. Manilla bracelets were the primary trade currency at Bonny, where European traders exchanged manufactured goods for palm oil and earlier for enslaved Africans. The Pepple dynasty controlled the commercial networks, and the "houses" (war canoe houses) of Bonny served as both trading firms and political units.
