Surame Ancient Walled City

About

Surame, located in Sokoto State, was the capital of the Kebbi Kingdom founded in the early 16th century by Kotal Kanta after his break from the Songhai Empire. The city featured massive defensive walls 8-10 meters high, an elaborate gatehouse system, and sophisticated urban planning. Described by Leo Africanus as one of the great cities of the Sudan, its ruins remain one of the most significant archaeological sites in northern Nigeria and are on the UNESCO tentative list.
