Nkwerre Palm Oil Heritage

About

Nkwerre in Imo State lies in the heart of the Igbo palm oil belt, where palm oil extraction has been an economic and cultural cornerstone for centuries. Before petroleum, palm oil was Nigeria's leading export, and the southeastern "Oil Rivers" region took its colonial name from this trade. Traditional extraction using wooden presses and boiling vats remains practiced alongside modern mills, and palm oil is indispensable in Igbo cuisine for soups, stews, and ceremonial preparations.
