Epe Fish Market Heritage

About

Epe, situated on the Lagos Lagoon in Lagos State, has been a major freshwater and brackish-water fishing center for centuries. The Epe Fish Market is one of the oldest continuous fish markets in southwestern Nigeria, serving as a hub where Ilaje, Egun, and Ijebu fishing communities trade smoked and fresh fish. The town's fishing heritage predates colonial Lagos and sustains a living tradition of artisanal fish smoking using traditional kilns.
