Holy Cross Cathedral on Catholic Mission Street, Lagos, is the oldest Catholic church building in Nigeria. Founded in 1868 by the Society of African Missions (SMA) from Lyon, France, it became the seat of the Vicariate Apostolic of Lagos. The church played a central role in expanding Catholicism across southern Nigeria and developing Western education through associated mission schools.
