About

The Ayelala shrine in the Ilaje coastal communities of Ondo State is the seat of one of the most widely feared oath-taking deities in southwestern Nigeria. Ayelala, believed to have been a slave woman sacrificed to end an inter-community conflict, became a powerful deity of justice who strikes down oath-breakers. The tradition spread widely across Yoruba-speaking coastal lagoon communities and remains actively consulted for dispute resolution.
