Arochukwu Long Juju Shrine (Ibini Ukpabi)

Sacred

About

The Ibini Ukpabi oracle at Arochukwu, known to Europeans as the "Long Juju," was the most powerful oracle in pre-colonial southeastern Nigeria. Located in a cave system along the Enyong Creek, it served as a supreme court and spiritual authority across Igbo, Ibibio, and Efik territories. The Aro people leveraged the oracle's authority to build extensive trade networks. It was destroyed by the British during the Anglo-Aro War of 1901-1902.
