About

Ala (also Ana or Ani) is the Igbo earth goddess and guardian of morality, fertility, and the dead. The Ala shrine at Okija in Anambra State is one of the most significant sites of Ala worship. Ala is central to Igbo cosmology—violations of her laws (aru) require purification rituals. The shrine represents the Igbo understanding of the earth as a living, moral force.
